About Philip Bird Otology

Philip Bird was born in Kaitaia in New Zealand and graduated (MB ChB) from the University of Otago School of Medicine in 1987, and has been a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) since 1995.

After graduating he spent time as a House Surgeon in Wellington from 1987 to 1990. He then went on to complete advanced training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery from 1991 to 1995 firstly at Wellington Hospital and then at Christchurch Hospital. From 1996 to 1998 he was Fellow in Otology and Neurotology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, USA.

 

Mr Bird is based in Christchurch with his wife and three sons. He works partly in private practice as an Otolaryngologist, and also in public practice as Otolaryngologist at Christchurch Hospital. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Otago, Christchurch and also teaches in the audiology section in the Department of Communication Disorders at the University of Canterbury. He is a Surgeon for the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme and is a Visiting Neurotologist at Wellington Hospital, Wellington, NZ.
